Národné inštitúty zdravia (NIH) zaostávajú v udeľovaní grantov napriek zvýšenému financovaniu. An analysis by Jeremy Berg, former director of the NIH Center, shows that through March 6, 2026, the NIH had awarded 1,189 new and competitive renewal grants, up from 2,322 in the same period last year and 2,546 in 2024[1]. In 2025, 5564 fewer grants were awarded than in 2024 and the success rate of applications fell to around 17%, the lowest level in almost 30 years[2]. Prezident Trump podpísal vo februári výdavkový zákon na 1,2 bilióna dolárov, ktorý zahŕňa 49 miliárd dolárov pre NIH[1]. Berg cites screening of applications according to the agency's new priorities under Jay Bhattacharya, changes in funding policy, and a lack of leadership at NIH due to layoffs and the departure of several center directors[1]. Through March 3, 2026, NIH spent 74% less than the 2021–2024 average, largely due to funding renewals of existing multi-year projects instead of new awards[4]. V roku 2025 klesol počet ekvivalentov R01 grantov na 5885 oproti 7720 v roku 2024[5].
