Prehospital whole blood transfusion is not superior to standard treatment for severe bleeding. The SWiFT randomized trial found that, apart from logistical and safety advantages, whole blood transfusion did not produce any clinical improvement in patients with life-threatening bleeding in the prehospital setting. The study focused on transferred patients. Standard treatment consists of blood components such as red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Whole blood offers only logistical and safety benefits, not clinical benefits. The results were published on MedPage Today.
