By March 2026, more than 1,000 confirmed and probable cases of shigellosis and other gastrointestinal infections, including salmonellosis, had been detected in travelers returning from Cape Verde. These cases are reported in several European Union/European Economic Area countries, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. There are still reports of new cases. Shigellosis is a disease caused by Shigella bacteria that leads to gastrointestinal problems. Symptoms include diarrhea with mucus or blood, fever, nausea, stomach cramps, and sometimes painful urination or bowel movements. In severe cases, dysentery, dehydration, toxemia or complications such as rectal prolapse or meningitis may occur. Most symptoms last 4 to 7 days, and patients usually recover with rehydration. In Europe, infections most often occur in late summer and autumn.
