The Trump administration froze part of the federal Medicaid funding for the state of Minnesota due to suspicions of fraud and misuse of taxpayer money.[1][2] The investigation is being led by Vice President J.D. Vance at the behest of President Trump.[1][2] Trump claims that members of the Somali community in Minnesota embezzled an estimated $19 billion, while American media outlets such as the New York Times put the figure in the hundreds of millions of dollars.[1][2] Minnesota Governor Tim Walz estimated the damage to the affected programs at $250 million.[1][2] Minnesota's Medicaid program benefits approximately 1.3 million people, 40 percent of whom are children, and also supports pregnant women, the disabled, and the elderly.[2] Suspicions include fictitious billing, duplicate payments and eligibility manipulation.[3]
