The SOHO study demonstrated that high-flow oxygen did not produce better survival outcomes for patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure compared with standard oxygen. Mortality on the 28th day was identical in both groups of patients – 14.6%. High oxygen flow has long been thought to be a more effective treatment for severe hypoxemia, but this study challenges that assumption. The results suggest that standard oxygen may be just as effective in saving patients with this condition. These findings may change clinical practice in the treatment of respiratory failure. The study highlights the need to reassess current procedures for administering oxygen to patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure.
