The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) assesses the risk to the general population in the EU/EEA from an outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Kent, England, as very low. The reason is the very low probability of exposure and infection. As of 17 March 2026, there have been 9 confirmed cases and 11 suspected cases, for a total of 20 cases linked to Canterbury, Kent[1][3]. Of the confirmed cases, 6 are group B meningococci, all patients were hospitalized and 2 people died[1][3]. Affected are mostly young adults, including students[1]. The UK Health Security Agency administered more than 2,500 doses of antibiotics to students, close contacts and visitors to the club[1]. The ECDC emphasizes that the risk to the EU/EEA remains very low due to the minimal likelihood of spread[9].
