March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, but it is overlooked by many if they are not in touch with or looking for patients.[1] A new survey from Oshi Health found that 52% of adults ages 18-54 don't feel comfortable talking to a doctor about their stools.[1] As many as 71% of Americans would rather do something unpleasant like sit in traffic (45%) or do taxes (35%) than discuss stools in society.[1] Gastrointestinal problems such as bloating, reflux, constipation and diarrhea are widespread, but stigma leads to self-diagnosis on the Internet instead of seeing a doctor.[1] Such behavior causes anxiety, delayed diagnoses, and annual costs exceeding $136 billion.[1] Changes in the stool, including blood, can signal early colorectal cancer, so consultation with a gastroenterologist is important.[1] Doctors encourage open conversations about stool to remove shame and allow early detection of problems, including cancer.[2]
