Ultra-processed foods such as French fries, frozen meals, sugary drinks and packaged snacks greatly increase the risk of serious heart problems.[1][2] A US study found that people consuming around nine servings a day had a 67% higher risk of heart attack, stroke or death from heart disease compared to those who ate around one serving a day.[1] The risk increases gradually – each additional daily serving increased the likelihood of these events by more than 5%.[1] This relationship was found even after accounting for calories, overall diet quality, and common health problems.[1] Research also confirms that a 10% increase in daily consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with a 6% increase in the risk of heart disease.[1][3] Among the riskiest ultra-processed foods are sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meats such as sausages, hot dogs, and bacon.[2]
