A common oral bacteria linked to gum disease may trigger and promote breast cancer, according to new research. This bacteria enters the breast tissue through the bloodstream. There it causes DNA damage. At the same time, it accelerates the growth and spread of the tumor. Cancer cells become more aggressive and resistant to therapy. The effect is even stronger in people with BRCA1 mutations. This raises questions about the role of oral health in cancer risk.
