A new method of allergen immunotherapy using microneedle patches, the so-called MCIT (microneedle cutaneous immunotherapy). MCIT has been tested in mice with food and inhalation allergens, also in the context of prevention of sensitization. MCIT enables high allergen availability (more than 70%) at lower doses and limited availability to the systemic circulation. At least the same efficacy as SCIT is expected, but with better safety and potential home application. MCIT allows the simultaneous application of several allergens in one patch. Clinical trials of MCIT are underway and it looks promising as a minimally invasive and painless form of allergen immunotherapy.
