The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded more than one million excess deaths in the U.S. during the coronavirus pandemic.[2] According to the CDC, at least 923,000 Americans have died from Covid-19, with 91% of those deaths being directly caused by the disease and 9% having the virus as a contributing factor.[2] In total, Covid-19 caused the death of more than 940 thousand people in the USA.[1] Excess deaths also included deaths from hypertension, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease, in part due to an overburdened health care system and delayed care.[2] An Oxford study analyzing CDC data for the period from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022 showed that Covid-19 was the underlying cause of death in more than 1,300 children and adolescents under the age of 19, which represented 2% of all deaths in this age group (800 out of 43,000) with a death rate of 1.0 per 100,000 population.[1] Covid thus became the main cause of death from infectious diseases in children and adolescents, ahead of flu and pneumonia with a rate of 0.6 per 100,000.[1] The highest number of child deaths related to Covid was in January 2022, when 160 children and adolescents died.[1] However, the main cause of death in this age category remained health problems before birth with a rate of 12.7 per 100,000 inhabitants.[1]
