Adults with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, and weakened immune systems face a higher risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, including influenza and COVID-19.[1] Among adults aged 19 and older, only 22.8 percent were current on all recommended vaccines in 2022, leaving millions vulnerable to diseases such as influenza, shingles, pneumococcal disease, and COVID-19.[3] According to a late 2023 GHLF survey, 28 percent of patients were told they were ineligible for the vaccine because of age, even though they would be because of a chronic condition.[1] Another 24 percent were told the vaccine was not covered by insurance, despite the legal mandate for free coverage for all eligible patients.[1] Nearly 50 percent of survey participants never received the vaccine due to access issues.[1] Less than a third of adults under 65 at higher risk for pneumococcal disease have received the appropriate vaccine, and less than 50 percent of eligible adults are current on the shingles vaccine.[3] A doctor's recommendation significantly increases the likelihood of vaccination in patients with chronic conditions.[4]
