A Mayo Clinic study found that postmenopausal women using menopausal hormone therapy and the obesity drug tirzepatide lost 35% more weight than those who took tirzepatide alone.[1] Tirzepatide is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of overweight and obesity.[1] Menopause accelerates weight gain and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other conditions due to the decline in estrogen.[1] Hormone therapy is the most effective first-line treatment for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats, which affect up to 75% of postmenopausal women.[1] The study is observational, so it cannot confirm that hormone therapy directly caused additional weight loss.[1] The findings were published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women's Health.[1]
