The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe have published a joint report on tuberculosis surveillance and monitoring in Europe for 2023[1]. In 29 countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area, 38,993 cases of tuberculosis were reported in 2023 with a notification rate of 8.6 per 100,000 inhabitants[1]. The report suggests that around 1 in 5 tuberculosis cases are missing in the European region, meaning that many infected people remain undiagnosed and untreated[5]. The number of tuberculosis cases in children under 15 years of age in Europe and Central Asia increased by almost 10 percent year-on-year, with approximately 7,500 cases reported in 2023[5]. Experts attribute this increase to the disruption of health services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic[5]. The most cases of tuberculosis in 2023 were recorded in Russia, Ukraine and Romania, while Slovakia is among the countries with a minimal increase in cases[5].
