Falls are common in the elderly, and fall-related injuries are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. In the UK, it is estimated that one third of people aged 65 and over fall each year, with up to half of those aged 80 and over. Offer a comprehensive falls assessment to everyone over 65 or over 50 with a risk condition in hospital and residential settings and people in the community who meet specific criteria. Offer a fall prevention exercise program to community-dwelling older adults who have fallen and have a gait or balance disorder. Exercise and physical activity are important interventions for people at risk of falls. Assessment of the home environment is most effective depending on the clinical setting and the provision of therapy, which can be provided by other appropriately trained healthcare professionals as needed.
