Maiedha Raza, a general practitioner and mental health clinician, states that compassionate leadership allows one to recognize the humanity of another and respond with presence instead of judgment. During her leadership journey, she learned a few principles from great leaders. The first is to actively listen with curiosity: approach a frustrated, overwhelmed or burned-out colleague as a complex patient, be attentive, non-judgmental and sincerely interested in their perspective. Most people want to be heard, validated and shown empathy. The second principle is to model vulnerability: to admit insecurity, acknowledge difficulties or openly reflect on mistakes, thus signaling safety to others. This honesty strengthens team culture, deepens trust and promotes psychological safety. Compassionate leaders provide feedback that is direct yet respectful, anchored in behavior.
