In the US, sepsis is associated with nearly one in five hospital deaths in children. Sepsis affected 1.3% of pediatric hospitalizations, which corresponds to approximately one in every 75 hospitalized children. More than one in ten children with sepsis died during hospitalization. The authors estimate that more than 18,000 hospitalized children in the US have sepsis each year, including more than 1,800 who do not survive to discharge. Most cases of pediatric sepsis were present at hospital admission, a smaller but significant proportion developed during hospitalization and were associated with higher mortality. Rates of childhood sepsis and related deaths remained relatively stable nationally between 2016 and 2022. The study provides the first standardized national estimates of childhood sepsis based on clinical data from US hospitals.[1]
