The LungIMPACT trial is a large randomized controlled trial in primary care in the UK. It investigated artificial intelligence (AI)-based immediate prioritization of chest X-ray in the lung cancer diagnostic pathway versus standard workflow. AI prioritization did not significantly reduce the time to CT. AI prioritization also did not significantly reduce the time to lung cancer diagnosis. The results suggest that AI-based prioritization alone is unlikely to speed up the lung cancer diagnostic pathway. The study was published in Nature Medicine online on March 24, 2026.
