The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling on countries on World Tuberculosis Day to accelerate action to end tuberculosis (TB) and expand access to emergency services.[5] WHO recommends new diagnostic tools that allow fast and accurate results in the early detection of TB.[7] These innovations include diagnostic tests that can be used near the point of care and tongue swabs that help detect disease more quickly.[5] These modern diagnostic solutions have the potential to reach more patients and improve the availability of diagnostics.[7] In the European region, more than 7,500 cases of tuberculosis infection among children under the age of fifteen were recorded in 2023, which represents an annual increase of approximately 650 cases compared to 2022.[5] The WHO has long warned against cutting off funding for global programs against tuberculosis, as this could lead to the development of hard-to-treat variants of the disease.[5]
