Alcohol-related liver diseases often progress from fatty liver to alcoholic hepatitis to cirrhosis of the liver.[1][2][3] The main cause is excessive alcohol consumption, which leads to structural abnormalities of the liver and its dysfunction.[2][3] Consumption of more than 80 g of ethanol per day, which corresponds to 2 liters of beer, 1 liter of wine or 5-6 glasses of mixed drinks, significantly increases the risk.[2] Alcoholic hepatitis is an acute inflammation of the liver with cell death and scarring that affects up to 35% of heavy alcoholics.[1] The repeated process leads to scarring that impairs blood flow, toxin filtration, and bile production, which can result in liver failure.[1] Quitting alcohol strengthens the liver, reduces toxins in the blood, and can stop the progression of obesity or mild hepatitis.[1][2] In severe hepatitis and cirrhosis, the prognosis is poor if consumption continues, and liver transplantation may be required.[2]
