According to a study published today, most radiologists were unable to distinguish between artificial X-ray images, the so-called deepfakes, from real images. Radiologists evaluated a combination of real and fake images. Initially, only seven out of 17 radiologists correctly identified deepfakes. The study underlines the potential for misuse of these technologies in medicine. Deepfake x-rays have also fooled artificial intelligence systems. The main finding is that both human experts and AI failed to detect fakes. This highlights the risks in radiological diagnostics.
