A systematic review examined the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of inflammation-related ocular degenerations, including dry eye syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma.[1] The research included an analysis of studies measuring intraocular pressure, visual acuity, symptoms and other clinical indicators.[1] The included studies showed heterogeneity in methodology, high risk of bias and very low certainty of evidence.[1] Although acupuncture appears as a potential therapy modulating inflammatory and oxidative processes in ocular pathologies, there are no effective protocols to date for the treatment of these degenerations.[1] The results suggest that further research with better quality of evidence is needed to definitively confirm the effectiveness of acupuncture for ocular degenerations related to inflammation.[1]
