The US administration plans to cancel or move Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) programs it deems unnecessary, duplicative or politicized. These actions would reverse decades of health progress, make Americans less safe and raise health care costs, according to the article. Members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) were fired and replaced, more than 1,500 CDC employees were laid off, and half of the CDC's national centers were closed. CDC is the only federal agency focused on prevention at the community level, tracking hundreds of nutrients and environmental toxins in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. These data led to the fortification of flour with folic acid, the removal of lead from gasoline, and the creation of clinical guidelines for chronic diseases. The CDC has issued opioid prescribing guidelines and education about threats such as endocrine disruptors, nanoparticles, and microplastics. The agency could be more effective with stronger ties to state and local health authorities.
