GPs in England voted 98.9% in a BMA referendum to reject government-mandated changes to their 2026-27 contracts. Almost 17,000 GPs and registrars took part in the referendum, representing a 55% turnout. The government agreement requires practices to process all clinically urgent requests on the same day and for GPs to seek specialist advice remotely for every referral to selected specialities. The trade union described this agreement as "unrealistic". GPs are now calling on the Government to return to negotiations with the BMA's General Practice Committee for England (GPC England) to develop a brand new contract. BMA leadership said the government could not ignore the strength of feeling about a profession already at tipping point.
