First science from private Moon lander challenges picture of lunar volcanism

The first scientific measurements from the private Blue Ghost lunar lander challenge the traditional view of lunar volcanism.[2] Blue Ghost landed on March 2, 2025 in the Mare Crisium impact crater outside the region rich in heat-producing elements.[2] Measurements of underground temperatures have shown that the heat at this location is not as different from the temperatures of the Apollo landing sites as expected.[2] Almost all lunar lava flows are concentrated on the Earth-facing side in the dark plains.[2] Scientists hypothesized that the concentration of heat-producing chemical elements on the near-side promoted widespread volcanism.[2] According to data from the 2013 GRAIL orbiter, the lunar crust in the Procellarum KREEP Terrain (PKT) region is thinner than elsewhere on the Moon.[2] These findings were presented on March 17 at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas.[2]
