ArXiv, the pioneering preprint server since 1991, will become a separate nonprofit organization on July 1 after more than 20 years of hosting at Cornell University[2]. This change will make it possible to raise more money from a wider range of donors to fund staff and technology[2]. The number of preprints on the server is expected to exceed 300,000[2] this year. Funding will help address challenges such as substandard or fraudulent contributions generated by artificial intelligence[2]. Major donors are institutions such as the Simons Foundation and Schmidt Sciences, which have recently supported technical improvements[2]. Members pay fees based on the volume of preprints uploaded, giving them a voice in management and access to usage data[2].
