Scientists have discovered that some cancer drugs accumulate in the lysosomes of tumor cells. This build-up creates sustained-release drug reservoirs. The result is an uneven distribution of the drug in the tumor. Some cancer cells are thus exposed to a high concentration of the drug, while others are minimally affected. This mechanism explains why cancer treatment is not equally effective for all patients. A better understanding of this process could lead to more personalized treatment.
