In December 2025, two imported cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) were reported in France. Together with 14 cases in Saudi Arabia in early 2025, these events highlight the need for continued vigilance against MERS. Although the pandemic potential of MERS-CoV is considered limited, the fluctuating incidence of cases and the ongoing threat of infection call for intensified research and control efforts. A MERS outbreak can have a negative impact on trade and travel, as evidenced by the economic loss in South Korea. The basic reproductive number of MERS-CoV suggests limited spread of infection. The severity of the course of MERS is higher in people with metabolic syndromes, especially diabetes.
