The World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have declared the 2026 Ebola disease outbreak a public health emergency. This outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, affects the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. It represents one of Africa's most significant epidemic emergencies. As of May 27, 2026, 129 confirmed cases, 1077 suspected cases, and 246 suspected deaths have been reported. Virus transmission occurs in highly mobile areas such as mining and commercial corridors. Conflict-affected zones are also impacted, adding to the situation's complexity. There is an increasing risk of regional dissemination of the disease.
