[Correspondence] Single-dose mRNA vaccines against Andes hantavirus

In May 2026, an outbreak of Andes hantavirus occurred on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which departed from Argentina. This transmission context on a cruise ship is unprecedented in the known epidemiology of the virus. The Andes hantavirus is the only member of the Hantaviridae family capable of efficient person-to-person spread through close contact with respiratory secretions. Its epidemic potential was demonstrated during the 2018–19 Epuyén outbreak in Argentina. During this epidemic, which originated from a social gathering, four waves of infection occurred. This resulted in 34 confirmed cases and 11 deaths.
