Doctors at Ostrava University Hospital have successfully performed the first laser thermoablation therapy for brain tumors in the Czech Republic. This unique method is a gentle procedure that does not require opening the skull but uses a laser to destroy tumor cells. It is intended for a very narrow group of patients for whom traditional brain surgery would be too risky or whose tumor location prevents standard surgical intervention. The procedure involves inserting a laser fiber into the tumor through an opening only a few millimeters in size, with subsequent destruction of cells by heat monitored under magnetic resonance imaging. So far, two patients have successfully undergone this therapy. The method expands the portfolio of treatment options and makes Ostrava University Hospital the first facility in the Czech Republic to offer all available surgical techniques for the brain. Experts learned about the new procedure during internships in Warsaw and London.
