Doctors at Bulovka and VFN in Prague use a new method to treat soft tissue sarcomas, which most commonly occur in the lower limbs. The method called isolated hyperthermic limb perfusion allows drugs to be applied in several times higher doses directly to the affected limb, which is isolated from blood circulation and connected to extracorporeal circulation. During approximately three-hour surgery, doctors apply TNF alpha and chemotherapy while heating the limb to optimal temperature. The facility performs ten to fifteen such operations annually and has performed nearly 130 in total. The tumor typically shrinks within six to eight weeks, allowing subsequent surgical removal. According to published data, this method successfully preserved the limb in approximately four-fifths of patients for whom amputation was originally considered.
