Suicide is the second leading cause of death among American adolescents aged 10-24 years. Between 1999 and 2024, there were 159,241 suicide deaths in this age group. Between 2017 and 2024, suicide rates declined across all age groups and the male-to-female gap narrowed by 18.9 percent. However, among girls aged 10-14, suicide rates have consistently increased since 2011. Asphyxiation-related suicides have declined across all groups since 2018, but firearm suicide rates are increasing among females in the 10-14 and 20-24 age groups. The highest suicide rates were consistently recorded in the 20-24 age group. The study emphasizes the need to adapt prevention measures particularly for girls aged 10-14 years.
