For children and young people with neurological disorders, the transition from paediatric to adult neurology services represents a vulnerable period. During this transition, there are risks of disruptions to continuity of care and optimal treatment. Depending on the diagnosis, avoidable deterioration of the condition may also occur. Updated UK guidance from the Association of British Neurologists and the British Paediatric Neurology Association (ABN/BPNA), to be published in April 2026, provides practical recommendations. According to these, the transition should begin no later than 16 years of age and be completed by 18 years. Decision-making regarding the transition, including its precise timing, should be shared among paediatric and adult services, the young person, and their families and carers. Paediatric teams should lead the process until the transition is finished, and decisions should account for local resources.
