Deep brain stimulation (DBS) was introduced for patients with Parkinson's disease to avoid serious complications of bilateral stereotactic ablation. These complications include impairment of speech, swallowing, balance, and gait, all of which substantially affect quality of life. DBS subsequently became the dominant neurosurgical procedure for the treatment of medically refractory Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. However, MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRIgFUS) has rekindled widespread interest in stereotactic ablation.
