The article discusses the 2024 revisions of the McDonald criteria for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). These revisions are important for a more precise identification of the disease. The new criteria include the optic nerve as a fifth anatomical location for demonstrating dissemination in space. This means that optic nerve involvement can now be officially recognized as evidence of disease spread in the body. Optic nerve involvement can be supported by optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual evoked potentials (VEPs), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These methods help doctors objectively assess the condition of the optic nerve. However, it is crucial that no other better explanation exists for the observed changes. These changes in diagnostic criteria contribute to earlier and more accurate diagnosis of MS.
