The CLEAR Taiwan study examined the effectiveness and safety of bempedoic acid in 180 patients with inadequately controlled hypercholesterolemia who received the drug for 12 weeks as an addition to other lipid-lowering medications. Bempedoic acid achieved significant reductions in LDL cholesterol across all studied patient groups, with greater reductions observed in patients without prior cardiovascular events, statin-intolerant patients, younger patients (< 65 years), and women. The drug also reduced levels of the inflammatory marker hsCRP in all groups, particularly in younger patients and those without diabetes. Bempedoic acid was well tolerated with a low incidence of adverse events and no new safety signals identified. Changes in liver enzymes, kidney function, and uric acid were minimal. The results support the use of bempedoic acid as a flexible option to address remaining gaps in lipid management.
