Empirical Validation and Predictive Utility of the Perinatal Grief Scale in Men after Perinatal Loss

The study validated the Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS) specifically in fathers who experienced pregnancy loss or miscarriage. The research included 276 fathers from the Italian OPALE project and tested the association between PGS scores and trauma symptoms using three validated instruments. The optimal PGS threshold of ≥92 demonstrated sensitivity of 81.0% and specificity of 81.8%. Fathers with scores ≥92 had 19.12 times higher odds of high trauma symptoms. ROC analysis showed an AUC value of 0.829. Results were consistent across all three measurement instruments and remained robust after adjusting for time since loss, father's age, and loss type. This is the first validation of the PGS specifically for men with demonstrated strong predictive validity.
