Powdery mildew is a fungal disease of zucchini that manifests as a white coating on leaves, stems, and fruits and thrives in humid conditions. Affected plants deteriorate because they are deprived of light needed for growth, leaves dry out, and the plant often dies. Prevention of powdery mildew is aided by proper placement of zucchini with adequate air and space, removal of drying leaves, and correct watering directly at the plant roots, not on the leaves. An effective homemade spray is prepared by soaking 15 grams of ground cloves in one liter of water overnight, with the recommendation to add 15 grams of cinnamon, which contains cinnamaldehyde with natural fungicidal properties. The spray is applied by spraying on the leaves and ideally prevention begins before flowering, repeating approximately every 10 to 14 days. If powdery mildew has already appeared, the spray is repeated every 3 to 4 days while signs of infestation are visible.
