CD4+ T cells impair tumor growth through IL-3 and TNF-dependent vascular damage

A study published in Science journal in June 2026 investigated the mechanism by which CD4+ T cells impair tumor growth. The research demonstrated that CD4+ T cells inhibit tumor growth primarily through damaging blood vessels within the tumor. This process is dependent on two key molecules: interleukin-3 (IL-3) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). These cytokines produced by CD4+ T cells act on the tumor's vascular system and disrupt its function. Damage to the tumor vasculature leads to impaired blood and nutrient supply to the tumor, thereby inhibiting its growth. The findings suggest a novel mechanism by which the immune system controls tumor growth and may have implications for developing new cancer immunotherapies.
