Czech hospitals are undergoing a transformation of their bed capacity, reducing acute care beds while increasing capacity for follow-up and long-term care. České Budějovice Hospital reduced acute beds by 81, currently operating 1,393 beds total, of which 1,114 are acute. Changes are linked to declining birth rates and the need to improve patient comfort. Bílovecká Hospital transformed 20 acute surgical beds into day care services. Kutná Hora Hospital experienced the most significant changes – from the original 219 acute beds, only 46 remain in operation, with others converted to follow-up and palliative care beds. These changes resulted in lower costs for personnel, medications, and materials. Demographic trends and an aging population will require further transformations in all hospitals in the future.
