Selenium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in protecting cells from damage and supporting the immune system. It is necessary for proper thyroid function, as it enables the conversion of inactive thyroid hormone T4 to its active form T3. Insufficient selenium intake is associated with fatigue, feeling cold, slowed thinking, and increased risk of autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Selenium supports the production of white blood cells, and its deficiency increases susceptibility to infections and worsens the course of inflammatory diseases. Visible signs of selenium deficiency include excessive hair loss, brittle nails, and muscle weakness. Rich natural sources of selenium include Brazil nuts, seafood, fish, organ meats, eggs, and some plant sources. Consultation with a doctor is recommended before taking supplements, as excessive selenium intake can be harmful.
