Sri Lanka is struggling with the worst dengue fever epidemic in recent years. Since January, authorities have recorded more than 44,000 cases of the disease and 28 deaths, including five children. Dengue fever typically occurs in Sri Lanka during the monsoon season, but unplanned urbanization and damage caused by tropical storm Ditwah in November of last year have worsened the situation. The number of cases nearly doubled from 5,651 in April to 10,638 in the first two weeks of June. More than half of all cases come from the western region, including the capital Colombo with 9,429 cases. Authorities expect that the number of infected people could match 2019, when Sri Lanka recorded 105,000 cases. Dengue fever is a viral tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes, which manifests with high fevers and severe headaches, joint and muscle pain.
