The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed 245 lives out of a total of 933 confirmed cases. Minister of Health Samuel Roger Kamba reported that 80 patients have successfully recovered from the disease. The current epidemic, declared in mid-May, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain. Unlike the better-known Zaire strain, for which a vaccine exists, there is currently no available vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain. The spread of the virus is complicated by a long-term humanitarian crisis, high population mobility, and an unstable security situation. The infection has already spread to the neighboring provinces of North and South Kivu, and several imported cases have also been reported in neighboring Uganda. American doctor Patrick LaRochelle, who worked in the epicenter of the outbreak, was quarantined in Prague after contact with infected patients, but no symptoms appeared.
