At the current FIFA World Cup, an unusual fashion trend has emerged where players are cutting holes in their socks. According to footballers, this modification offers several benefits – it improves comfort, reduces pressure on the calves, and increases blood flow, thereby reducing the risk of cramps and injuries. However, doctor Raj Brar disagrees with this approach and instead recommends wearing compression socks with higher pressure as a recovery measure between matches. Alan Van Nielsen, former head of sock manufacturer Hummel, points out that modern sock technologies already provide better cushioning zones, compression zones, and mesh inserts for heat regulation and ventilation. Similar practices appear in other sports, such as cricket players cutting their shoes to eliminate toe blisters. This trend has been appearing in professional football for several years and is not unique to the World Cup.
