A study of long-lived families has identified rare genetic variants that may contribute to a longer and healthier life. Research presented at the European Society of Human Genetics conference suggests that studying entire families provides a clearer picture of longevity mechanisms. Previous findings showed that middle-aged individuals with long-lived parents developed cardiometabolic diseases an average of 13 years later. Scientists analyzed the genomes of 212 groups of sibships and narrowed the search to 12 rare protein-altering genetic variants. One of these variants was found in the CGAS gene, which has previously been linked to aging. It is believed that this mutation in the CGAS gene reduces the inflammatory response in the body, thereby contributing to protective mechanisms and extending healthy lifespan. The reduced inflammatory response may protect against damage associated with aging while preserving the body's ability to defend itself. However, scientists caution that much more research is needed before any implications for human health can be determined.
