Perioperative intravenous fluid and chronic kidney disease: long-term follow-up of the Restrictive versus Liberal Fluid Therapy in Major Abdominal Surgery (RELIEF) randomised trial

The RELIEF study investigated the effects of different intravenous fluid regimens during major abdominal surgery. It was found that a restrictive fluid regimen (limited fluid volume) increased the risk of acute kidney injury immediately after surgery. The research team subsequently examined whether this acute kidney injury caused by restrictive fluid therapy leads to long-term development of chronic kidney disease. The study represents long-term follow-up of patients from the original RELIEF randomized trial to determine long-term consequences on kidney function.
