A decade of hair-loss clinical trials: a registry-based analysis of studies registered on ClinicalTrials.gov

Researchers analyzed 514 clinical trials for hair-loss treatment registered on ClinicalTrials.gov between 2015 and 2025. The number of registrations increased over time, particularly after 2020, with most trials completed or actively recruiting participants. Research was global but concentrated mainly in North America. The most frequently tested indications were androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata, with pharmacologic therapies being most common. Researchers found heterogeneous outcome reporting, infrequent use of objective imaging, and funding divided between industry and academic or non-profit institutions. The analysis highlights the need for standardized outcome measures and better alignment of research investments with clinical needs.
