Erysipelas, commonly known as rose, is an acute infectious disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes. The disease most frequently affects the lower extremities and face, manifesting with pronounced redness, swelling, and pain in the affected area. The bacteria enter the body through visible wounds or microscopic skin damage and spread rapidly, causing fever, chills, and fatigue. The infection is highly contagious and spreads through contact with infected skin or secretions. Children, elderly people, and individuals with chronic diseases are more susceptible. If erysipelas is not treated promptly, it can spread to deeper tissues or into the bloodstream with serious health consequences. Treatment consists of antibiotics prescribed as oral medications or topical ointments.
