New brain study reveals speech learning works differently than we thought

A new study conducted by researchers from McGill University and Yale School of Medicine suggests that learning and remembering speech depends more on how the brain processes sounds and physical sensations than on areas controlling mouth and face movements. The researchers used transcranial magnetic stimulation to temporarily disrupt activity in three key brain regions: the auditory cortex, somatosensory cortex, and motor cortex. When activity in either the auditory or somatosensory cortex was disrupted, participants showed significantly poorer retention of learned speech patterns. Disrupting the motor cortex had little effect on retention. These findings could change approaches to speech therapy and help develop future technologies for restoring communication after stroke.
